1/23/2024 0 Comments Pillars of eternity gameplay![]() The deal-breaker is the pandering to nostalgia. ![]() I liked it, but I wasn't too fond of the combat there either (for completely different reasons though, more to do with how building characters to be good in combat tends to cost them dialogue unless they're a Rogue.) In and of itself, this isn't a deal-breaker. "RolePlay" and "equip the anti-paralysis gear before you can even know they inflict it" is. Pillars is full of these kinds of encounters that I often wonder if they even cared for the 'RP' in RPG on some level. Pillars of Eternity is, at least to this 20 year-old career gamer, obvious pandering to the people with rose-tinted nostalgia who start every other sentence with "You know, it was better back in my day when."Įncounter design over a long period of time has grown to become better because at best the encounter design of yore was a challenge and, at worst, functionally broke immersion by requiring you to have done a not-so-obvious set of events in a very specific order. I've certainly grown to absolutely loathe it when a game kills you for not doing This One Thing™ that may not be immediately obvious (and, yes, Irenicus' Spellhold thing is among the few things in Baldurs Gate 2 I dislike.) I've rarely been fond of RPGs that place high-level opponents in low-level zones. I've never been fond of games that punish you for exploration. I bought PoE because I had a wonderful (limited) time with Baldurs Gate 2, yet I've found myself avidly hating it and being, in turn, quite happy that Obsidian got a fair degree of criticism for Pillars of Eternity 2. ![]() Instead, after submission, click the button under your post to assign the appropriate link flair, which will produce the same spoiler tags.
